GRSLA is committed to improving reading levels in Rochester. The 2015 Roc the Future report card, released in October, stated only 7% of RCSD’s third graders read at level. Our PreK—3rd grade initiative aims to change this statistic.
In the summer of 2015, GRSLA served 150 PreK children about to enter Kindergarten. Over the next few years, our goal is to bolster this initiative, recruiting more PreK children into our summer programs and retaining those children each summer as they go forward through elementary school. By the time they reach 3rd grade, our GRSLA scholars will have experienced 4 years of high-quality summer learning programming—programming that will help put a stop to the learning loss low-income children experience during the summer months, while simultaneously improving their math and reading skills.
As a result of our efforts, GRSLA programs have been recognized by the Anne E. Casey Foundation’s Campaign for Grade Level Reading as a national pacesetter community program.
Our goal is simple: by the time they reach 3rd grade, we want our scholars to be reading at level, meeting tough Core standards. Our kids have learned to love reading, and we want to help them gain the literacy skills they need to build a strong foundation for high school, college, and beyond.
