2026 Executive Director's Letter
Greater Rochester Summer Learning Association
Building Strong Foundations. Advancing Kindergarten Readiness. Creating Opportunities.
The summer of 2026 marked another significant year of achievement for the Greater Rochester Summer Learning Association (GRSLA) and our summerLEAP program. Despite challenges involving funding, program locations, and changes in educational partnerships, our organization remained steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that children from economically disadvantaged communities have access to high-quality early childhood education.
This summer, 225 children participated in summerLEAP across 14 classrooms, benefiting from six weeks of structured academic instruction, hands-on science, early literacy, mathematics, social-emotional learning, swimming, and enrichment activities.
Our program recorded an 82.38% attendance rate and 4,728 student-days of participation, reflecting meaningful engagement among participating children and families. COR Advantage assessment results demonstrated measurable growth across our four priority developmental areas, including average gains of 0.5 points in both mathematics and science and technology.
These accomplishments represent more than statistics. They reflect children developing confidence, strengthening foundational academic skills, building relationships, and gaining experiences that will support their transition into kindergarten.
Our partnerships with the Rochester Public Library, WXXI, the City of Rochester, and the YMCA further strengthened the educational experiences available to our students. We also continued building relationships with donors, foundations, and community leaders who recognize the importance of investing in kindergarten readiness.
I am particularly proud of the resilience and dedication demonstrated by our educators, Family Support Specialists, Program Support Specialists, community partners, and Board of Directors. Their commitment allowed us to adapt to significant operational challenges without losing sight of the children and families at the center of our mission.
As we reflect on 2026, we celebrate our accomplishments while recognizing that much work remains. Our vision continues to be a Rochester community where every child, regardless of family income or neighborhood, has access to the early learning opportunities necessary for lifelong success.
