Rafaella Borasi: Dean, Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester

borasi 2Raffaella Borasi was installed as the sixth dean of the Warner School in 2001. She has degrees in mathematics and education from the University of Torino and was a Fulbright Student at the State University of New York – University Buffalo, where she received her PhD in mathematics education. Borasi has worked on several research projects funded by the NSF to improve mathematics instruction and is the author/co-author of four books: Learning Mathematics Through Inquiry (1992); Reconceiving Mathematics Instruction: A Focus on Errors (1996); Reading Counts: Expanding the Role of Reading in Mathematics Classrooms (2000); and Blogging as Change: Transforming Science and Math Education Through New Media Literacies (2011). Borasi also co-authored an NSF-commissioned monograph, Professional Development that Supports School Mathematics Reform (2002), which was widely circulated by the NSF to school systems across the nation as a blueprint for successful school mathematics reform through professional development. Her current research and teaching interests are in the areas of entrepreneurship in education and online teaching and learning.

Jacque Cady: Board Member at Large

20131006_183503Jacque Cady has been an advocate for quality early education since 1990, when she first heard the Perry High Scope results—$1 spent on high quality ECE returns $7 in avoidance of later social remediation costs. A founding member of the Rochester Early Childhood Initiative, she has worked on building quantity of care and supporting the accreditation of childcare centers and homes. For several years she chaired the early childhood initiative and the advocacy committee, seeking more funding for subsidies and PreK. Current efforts include amassing a report and recommendation to the Rochester School District on comprehensive changes to the K-3 curriculum and related supports, and fundraising to bring high quality summer learning to children between their PreK and Kindergarten school years. Jacque has degrees in French from Indiana and Yale universities, and an MBA from Harvard.

Kathleen DaBoll-Lavoie: Dean, School of Education at Nazareth College

Kate DaBoll LavoieKathleen DaBoll-Lavoie is Dean of the School of Education at Nazareth College. Prior to this position, she served in multiple roles including Chair of the Inclusive Childhood Education Department, Director of Graduate Inclusive Early Childhood and Childhood Education Programs, and Director of the Undergraduate Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education Program. DaBoll-Lavoie is currently the Co-Chair of the New York State Professional Standards and Practices Board, which serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education on matters related to teaching in New York State. She is Immediate Past President of the New York Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and serves on the Teacher Education Advisory Group to the New York State Education Department. She was an invited member of the New York State Teacher Standards Development Working Group, and served on the New York Assessments for Initial Teacher and School Building Leader Certification Work Group. DaBoll-Lavoie received her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Syracuse University, and her master’s in secondary education from SUNY Binghamton. She has presented extensively at state and national conferences; her work has focused on the development of inclusive teacher education programs, school/college partnerships, and assessment.

Conger Gabel: CEO, GRSLA

Conger W Gabel IIConger Gabel is President and Founder of the Hardy Gabel Group, LLC, a management consulting firm specializing in product and technology development and financial management. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of RPC Photonics Corporation and is currently CEO of the Greater Rochester Summer Learning Association, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that focuses on summer enrichment programs to help low income Rochester-area students achieve their full potential. Early in his career, Conger taught high school physics and mathematics at the Polytechnic School in California and then served as Associate Professor of Optics at the University of Rochester. He received an A.B. in Physics from Princeton University where he graduated Magna cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, a M.A. in Education and a Ph.D. in Optics from the University of Rochester, and a M.S. in Management from Stanford University where he was an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow.

Mary-Jo Gabel: Board Member at Large

IMG_0464Mary-Jo Gabel is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer of the Hardy Gabel Group, LLC, and consults for Career Development Services, a non-for-profit organization focused on assisting individuals and corporations address the challenges of today’s workplace in leadership training, career development and transition services. Mary-Jo started with CDS in 1976 as a volunteer, and is now a Financial Consultant. In addition, Mary-Jo served as the Finance Director of Neighborworks Rochester from 2005 to 2010. Mary-Jo has been a Board Member and Chair of the Horizons Enrichment Program at the Harley School and was elected to the Board of the National Program in 2005. She served as Chair of the National Program 2007 to 2009 and is presently Treasurer. Mary-Jo has also served as the Chair of the Board of the Harley School and Chair of the Board of Trustees at Third Presbyterian. Mary-Jo received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Northwestern University and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Rochester. She has six years of mathematics teaching experience in Dryden, NY and in Rochester, NY.

Mick Gee: Head of School, The Allendale Columbia School

Mick GeeMick Gee is Head of School at Allendale Columbia (AC). Since joining AC in 2012, Mick has increased enrollment 25%, lead the effort in building a brand new Design & Innovation Lab, expanded AC’s global program by building two international houses, and overseen a 100% increase in the School’s annual fund. Prior to joining Allendale Columbia, Mick was the Upper School Director at Winchester Thurston School—an independent school for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 located in Pittsburgh, PA. While at Winchester Thurston, Mick made a substantial impact, helping to increase Upper School enrollment by approximately 25%, playing a key role in efforts to raise funds for improved facilities, chairing the Science and Technology committee of the Board’s strategic planning process, and helping the school earn grants from the Malone and E.E. Ford Foundations. A native of the United Kingdom, Mick earned a B.S. in Chemistry and Analytical Science from Loughborough University in England, a PGCE (MAT equivalent) from the same institution, and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Columbia University, Teachers College. In addition, he was selected by the Fulbright Scholarship program and participated in their Teacher Exchange program. Mick was recognized as a National Teacher of Excellence in the United Kingdom in 1996-1997, and completed the National Association of Independent Schools Edward E. Ford Fellowship for Aspiring Heads in 2006. Mick relocated to the Rochester area with his wife Amy and daughter Madeleine who is enrolled in Allendale Columbia’s Middle School.

Josh Gewolb: Attorney, Harter Secrest & Emery LLP

img_26Josh Gewolb is an attorney at Harter, Secrest & Emery LLP specializing in tax matters and not-for-profit organizations.  He served as pro bono counsel to GRSLA from its inception until joining the board in 2016.

 

 

Ward Ghory: Head of School, The Harley School

Picture1Ward Ghory, Ed.D., has served as the Head of the Harley School since 2013. His career can be described in three phases. First, Ward served for 13 years in the Cincinnati Public Schools as a secondary school English teacher, as the co-founder of a magnet school, as a school evaluator, and as associate principal of the nationally ranked Walnut Hills High School. In intermittent years away from teaching, Ward earned a doctorate in curriculum studies at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst). Second, from 1988-2000, Ward led the Upper School at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (BB&N) in Cambridge, MA. While at BB&N, he published two books with Robert L. Sinclair: Reaching Marginal Students and Reaching and Teaching All Children. Third, from 2000-2011, Ward led The University School of Milwaukee through two strategic plans and two fundraising campaigns.

Tom Hernández: Dean, School of Education and Human Services for The College at Brockport

Hernandez2006 2 Dr. Hernández is the Dean of the School of Education and Human Services for the College at Brockport. He is currently Co-Editor of the New York State School Counseling Journal and is a member of the American Counseling Association, the National Career Development Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, and the American Counseling Association – New York. He has also been an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Excellence and Equality in Education. Dr. Hernández is a past-president of the New York Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. Currently, Dr. Hernández serves as a board member for the New York State School Counselors Association and serves on the Western New York School Counselors Consortium.

Clayton Jones: Acting Assistant to the President, Monroe Community College

Clayton Jones 1-26-16Clayton Jones is Assistant to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Services at Monroe Community College. He also currently serves as MCC’s Government Relations Liaison. Clayton has a master’s degree in Behavioral Neuroscience from Florida State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

 

Joe Martino: CEO, EnCompass Resources for Learning

joe martinoJoseph M. Martino is the president and CEO of Education Enterprise of New York Inc., executive director of the Norman Howard School, and executive director of EnCompass Resources for Learning. Education Enterprise of New York supports a family of agencies including the Norman Howard School and EnCompass Resources for Learning, devoted to improving educational systems and increasing student success. He served as chief operating officer of Education Enterprise of New York prior to his appointment as President and CEO. The Norman Howard School has a 99 percent graduation rate and currently serves more than 130 youths with learning disabilities; EnCompass annually serves approximately 2,000 youth and their families at risk for educational failure and other negative outcomes. Before joining Education Enterprise of New York he served as principal accountability officer for Monroe County. In this role he was responsible for developing and implementing countywide systems to address revenue maximization, grants management, contract compliance and performance. On behalf of County Executive Maggie Brooks, he provided leadership and support to public-private partnerships addressing economic development, sustainable energy and educational success. Joe is one of the founding board members of the Discovery Charter School. He has a dual-major bachelor’s degree in history and government from King’s College and a master’s degree in history from Duquesne University, and he is working on a doctorate at Lehigh University. He lives in Penfield with his wife, Denise, and their daughter, Isabel, 7, and son, Teshome, 6.

Anjoo Sikka: Dean, Shear School of Education at SUNY Geneseo

anjoosikka_SqAnjoo Sikka is Dean of the Ella Cline Shear School of Education at SUNY Geneseo. Prior to her position at Geneseo, Sikka was a Professor of Education at the University of Houston’s Department of Urban Education. Sikka has also served as Associate Dean at Houston’s College of Public Service and Associate Dean for graduate and off-campus programs in the College of Humanities and Social Services. Sikka received her doctorate in Educational Psychology from Mississippi State University and a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Maharaja Sayajirao University in India. Her research has focused on perceptions of effective teaching, self-silencing and depression, and teacher assessment. She has published and presented widely on those topics. Sikka received the Professional Service Award twice from the University of Houston-Downtown. She is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi educational honor society and Phi Delta Kappa professional association for educators. In addition, she is a founding member of the Association for Psychological Science and a long-standing member of American Educational Research Association.
